What are age spots?

Everyone who ages develops spots on the face; these skin lesions are often called age spots or sun induced spots. The medical people often use fancy names like solar lentigines to indicate that these spots are related to excess sun exposure.

What do age spots look like?

Age spots are easily recognized; appear flat and round. The color may vary from dark brown, grey or black.

Where can age spots occur?

Age spots are generally found areas of the body which is exposed to sun. This includes the face, hand, shoulders and arms. Age spots typically appear on the forehead and appear as small grey round lesions. Rarely more than 1 cm, there may be multiple such spots on the face and arms

When do age spots generally occur?

Age spots are generally become visible after the 4th decade of life. However, sometimes they may occur in the 3rd decade of life in individuals who have had intense sun exposure during childhood.

Do age spots require treatment?

Age spots are harmless and do not require any treatment- they do not cause any symptoms. The major reason why people seek treatment is purely cosmetic.

There are many treatments for age spots. These include dermabrasion, laser and bleaching. The type of treatment depends on location and how much you want to spend.
